Une soirée cauchemardesque se déroule pour David, un ancien journaliste du New York Times, lorsque lui et son étrange nouveau voisin Robert, renversent accidentellement une fille sur son vélo. Buzzé et désorienté, David laisse Robert le convaincre de fuir les lieux et de laisser la jeune fille pour morte, afin de protéger sa carrière. Robert ne montre aucun remords et, au nom de lamitié, il fait des choses indescriptibles pour protéger le secret. Maintenant que la police est à fond à la recherche du tueur en fuite, les choses commencent à devenir incontrôlables lorsque le journal local de David lenvoie couvrir lhistoire où il rencontre la sœur de la fille décédée, Vanessa. Malgré les circonstances, et son désir profond de retrouver lassassin de sa sœur, les deux ont immédiatement une relation amoureuse, qui surprend et hante David, tout en poussant Robert à prendre des mesures brutales pour garder son nouvel ami pour lui.
